Hilo early in the morning had heavy rain and winds. After grabbing breakfast, the wind had eased up. Still took off in the rain, driving 45 minutes to Volcanoes National Park. Gained 4000 ft, and the temperature dropped from 65 to 55 deg. As I got there, the rain eased to a gentle mist. First I stopped at the visitor’s center to get info about hiking. Later as I came out, the sun was breaking through and saw a rainbow. Walked over to the crater edge and got a shot of a rainbow coming out of the Kilauea crater. - Volcanoes National Park 2-19-09 #gallery IMGP6515

At South Point found loops chiseled through rock that long ago were used to tie ropes to canoes to keep them from being drawn away by the current. The ocean drops off so quickly that anchors are not practical. Also there is such a strong constant wind that the trees grow sideways. Made it rough for ancient fisherman to have both wind and ocean currents teaming up to push you all the way to Australia - South Point, 2-21-09 #gallery IMGP7203
